Competency-Based Workforce Development
Since gaps in employee proficiency can have significant effects on safety and
production efficiency, a competent workforce is one of the most critical
elements for any oil and gas production facility. Developing and maintaining a
team of competent personnel is not always easy, especially given the global
nature of the current oil and gas industry and the increased focus on emerging
markets for future growth opportunities. In order to meet this challenge, Baker
has refined a
Competency-Based Workforce Development approach that allows us to
effectively train our clients’ employees, regardless of their background and
current skills.
As its name suggests, Competency-Based Workforce Development (CBWD) is focused on the ultimate results of the training activities, rather than the hours of instruction involved or the certifications earned. The process
starts with identification of the skills and knowledge required to perform
particular jobs. Once general and specialized skills lists for each job
classification are ready, Baker uses testing and interviews to assess the
capabilities of potential employees for each position. By comparing an
individual’s competency assessment with the skills list for his or her position,
our training professionals can formulate a training plan to develop the specific
skills necessary for the worker to safely and effectively perform his or her
responsibilities. Baker uses customized modules blending our classroom,
computer-based, and on-the-job training techniques to deliver the required
training. The use of ongoing evaluations and assessments ensures that the
individual benefited from the training and exhibits the knowledge and ability to
competently perform all required job duties. With the CBWD approach, Baker helps
our clients identify and develop the right person for the right job.
The CBWD approach delivers clear benefits to clients, regardless of the unique
personnel and training challenges associated with a specific geographical region
or type of facility. Since the individual training modules are focused on the
training needs of individuals, the time dedicated to training each employee is
used more effectively than if a large group of employees is forced to sit
through a one-size-fits-all curriculum that may not always be presenting
information that is relevant to every participant. Reducing the
time needed to effectively train and prepare front-line employees to be
completely competent from day one translates into improved profitability by
accelerating the start of full production. Additional financial benefits result
from the improved productivity of a workforce with the specific skills needed to
excel in their individual responsibilities and tasks.
