The design concept for the Laboratory for Telecommunications Services was established based on the natural topography of the site, the campus context, and the secure nature of the research. The severe topography enables the building’s lower level to recede into a hillside, allowing complete security. The Laboratory’s curved plan also derives its form from the direction of the slope, with the larger volume of the auditorium accommodated at the lower front portion of the site. The context of the Laboratory also determined the design direction; use of red brick and limestone pre-cast concrete details from the surrounding research and academic buildings helps reinforce the existing vocabulary of the university campus. Since both secure and non-secure activities are housed within the facility, including events involving the public, a hierarchy of access to spaces was created. In addition, the desire to create an informal environment in which to foster interaction between researchers led the design team to incorporate small gathering places throughout the building. The resulting design unites site, context, and function in a single and appropriate expression.
