The Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) distribution system serves the areas of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk in Hampton Roads, Virginia; and the cities/counties of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, York, James City, Williamsburg, New Kent, Charles City and Hanover on the Peninsula. As a result of rapid growth in the region since the late 1980s, and the geographical location at the end of each of the suppliers’ pipeline systems, VNG has reached a critical juncture in its ability to bring in additional, competitively-priced gas supply to meet current and future demand.

The Hampton Roads Crossing (HRX) pipeline connects VNG’s Northern and Southern distribution systems. Baker is serving as the prime engineering consultant responsible for route selection, permitting, survey/mapping, geotechnical, design, engineering, construction document development, right-of-way acquisition, public outreach and construction management for the proposed 21-mile, 24-inch natural gas pipeline to connect VNG’s northern and southern non-contiguous systems. The system is separated by the Hampton Roads Harbor and Elizabeth River. The $60 million project includes construction of approximately 6.5 miles of water crossings by horizontal directional drill (HDD) and trenching/plowing methods and approximately 14.5 miles of on-shore pipeline. The project will also include approximately 12 to 15 HDD crossings, spanning from 1,000 to 7,300 linear feet in length.
