The New York City sewer system is one of the largest in the world, treating over 1.5 billion gallons of wastewater each day for the city’s 8 million residents.  To help manage this critical engineering and environmental service, Baker developed a seamless citywide Geographic Information System (GIS) that includes mapping over 300,000 manholes and 8,000 miles of combined, sanitary and storm sewers.

Baker developed the GIS by interpreting the City’s collection of more than 175,000 sewer as-built and contract plans. The original source documents are supplemented with 12,000 field investigations to complete connectivity of the entire sewer network. Baker has developed three applications that will help New York City maintain their GIS and perform advanced sewer capacity modeling and incident mapping for flooding, backups and other urban hazards.

The GIS contains more than 10 million pieces of attribute data, including the year the sewer was constructed, pipe size and invert elevation, among many others that will allow both historical review of the system and integration with existing and future databases and applications.
