Baker's National Flood Hazard Layer Project Wins ACEC Engineering Excellence Award

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - January 13, 2009

Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE Alternext US: BKR), is the recipient of an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Metropolitan Washington (ACEC/MW) in the 2008-2009 ACEC/MW Engineering Excellence Awards Competition for their work on the National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL). Baker developed and deployed the NFHL under contract to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“The National Flood Hazard Layer leverages the power of the Internet to reduce the flood risk for millions of Americans,” said Dwight Beranek, Baker’s program executive for FEMA’s Flood Map Modernization (Map Mod) contract. “Baker is very proud of its contributions to FEMA’s mitigation mission.”

FEMA’s Map Mod program envisions making digital flood hazard data more widely available to government officials, engineers and planners, lenders, insurers and homeowners throughout the nation. The NFHL is a web-based geospatial database that contains flood hazard map information from the Map Mod program, including modernized effective Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) databases and subsequent changes. Before its online release to the public in May 2008, information in the NFHL could only be viewed by a limited number of users with GIS/mapping software. Baker is FEMA’s National Service Provider for Map Mod.
