This PennDOT project involved the addition of two direct connection ramps at the existing interchange of Interstate 79 and PA State Route 22/30 west of Pittsburgh. These so-called "missing ramps" provide a direct link between I-79 and the Pittsburgh International Airport.  Design work offered several sustainable opportunities including wetlands mitigation and concrete and asphalt recycling.  Coal found within the excavation area was salvaged while the acid water in nearby abandoned coal mines was collected, neutralized, and then released into natural tributaries.  Finally, Stormwater management best practices were included to retain the surface runoff.
